Initial Postpartum Consult
Parent:
Review of your medical history, the delivery, and medications you take
Physical assessment of the breasts and nipples
Discuss glandular tissue, breast size, surgeries, the delivery, and current symptoms
Address concerns and barriers
Breastfeeding repositioning assistance
Family planning discussion
Develop a plan of care
Establish breastfeeding goals
Provide education and connection to community resources as appropriate
Screen for perinatal mood disorders
Infant:
Discuss the infant's birth story
Weigh the infant before and after a feeding
Observe the infant latch
Assessment of the infant's tongue movement, mouth, and suck with a gloved finger
Breastfeeding repositioning assistance
Address concerns and barriers
Develop a plan of care
Establish feeding goals
Discuss supplementation (human or artificial/formula)
Provide education and connection to community resources as appropriate
Referrals to bodywork and pediatric dentists
Discuss other methods for feeding including bottle feeding and education on how to operate the breast pump

Postpartum Follow up
Similar to the Initial Postpartum Visit; what has changed since we last met? What is working and what isn't?

Education sessions do not involve assessment or discussion around your personal medical history or the infant's medical history; if you are looking for a consultation please referral to the prenatal or postpartum visits.
The education only visit is about how to breastfeed, benefits of breastfeeding, newborn care, and common questions and concerns related to milk production.
